History of the park from the State website:
“The original 20 acres was given in 1937 by Maud Williamson in memory of her mother. On the tract is an historic farmhouse once occupied by the original donor and her brother. Historically, the area is part of the Adam Matheny Donation Land Claim. Matheny came to Oregon in the migration of 1843. A relative, Daniel Matheny, operated the first wagon and team ferry on the Willamette River (1844) at the nearby town of Wheatland. A ferry still operates at this point.”
“The Oregon State Board of Health listed 48,146 cases of the virus between October 1, 1918, and September 30, 1920, and 3,675 resulting deaths, or a death rate of 505 per 100,000.”
Do you know of family members who contracted or died of the 1918 flue epidemic? Do you know stories of how it affected family members lives?
Elma Hewitt was born September 28, 1926, to, Elmer, 34, and Helen, 26, Hewitt. As a child, she lived in Albany, Oregon, with her father, mother, three sisters, and grandmother. She graduated from Oregon State University and was a physical education teacher and coach. She taught at Forest Grove High School for twenty-six years.
Elma more than generously gave of her time, talent, and leadership to the Hewitt, Matheny, Cooper Family, serving as president, producing and selling the family books, writing and mailing the newsletter, hauling the family albums from the Yamhill County Museum to the Reunion every year, and keeping the Association going in so many ways.
She is survived by her sister, Elinor Denton, and nieces Sharon Davis, Laura Denton, and Marcia Durbin.
We are hoping family will please add details of Elma’s life and her contributions to our Family.
