Reunion 2023

The Hewitt-Matheny-Cooper Family Association annual Family Reunion will take place Sunday, August 6, 2023. It is always on the first Sunday in August.

Duration: 7 hours. Folks in person can drop by and say hello to Zoom attendees ahead of the meeting.

SCHEDULE:

9:00 Visiting, family albums available to view, storytelling, kids games, The Daniel Matheny Hewitt Two-Hops-and-a-Jump Challenge, and the Country Store.

11:00 Wheatland Ferry Marker Dedication presented by J. Elaine Warmington Wagner (Daniel Matheny descendent), Regent of the Oregon State Society, Daughters of American Colonists. The ceremony will be at the marker on the right side of the road, immediately before you reach the ferry as you come from Maud Williamson Park. The address is 18270 Wheatland Road.

The president of the Daughters of American Colonists will not be able to attend due to illness but a vice president will be here to represent her. She will be accompanied by the Washington State regent and the honorary national president, also from the state of Washington. The current western section marker chairman and honorary national president is attending from Colorado. Many Oregon DAC members will be there, as well.

The McMinnville News-Register, the Salem Statesman Journal, and the Oregonian will be sending reporters to cover the event.

The marker dedication ceremony will be included in the ZOOM. The video may be choppy due to the reception in the area, but we should be able to hear the audio.

12:00 noon Potluck picnic back at Maud Williamson Park.

Annual family meeting We will start the meeting at 1pm, but you may join the ZOOM ahead of the meeting to visit.

Local Native American Lifeways presentation by Stephanie (Wood) Craig, Thomas Cooper, Sr. descendent and member and archivist of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Stephanie will present local Native history and Willamette Valley and Coastal tribal history. She will display local and regional family belongings (heirlooms).

Stephanie will be joined by her husband, Joe Craig. Joe is an enrolled Umatilla tribal member and the 4th great-grandson of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe. His grandparents met locally.

Joe and Stephanie live on one of the Cooper Donation Land Claims next to Stephanie’s parents. Stephanie is a Cooper on her father’s side and an enrolled member of The Confederate Tribes of Grand Ronde. She is Santiam and Yoncalla Kalapuya, Cow Creek Umpqua, Takelma Rogue River, Clackamas Chinook, Mohawk, Metis on her mother’s side. She is also the HMC archivist.

WHAT TO BRING:

A potluck dish to share. Plates, utensils, water, and lemonade will be provided. Please help with cleanup.

Donations for the Country Store – items large or small that may be of interest to family members, including produce, plants, services, books, household goods, etc.

In Memorium: Daniel John Matheny

Note from Nancy Matheny: “Just wanted to let you know that my husband passed away March 5, 2023 here in Lebanon, Oregon. His name is Daniel John Matheny, son of Donald Edward Matheny, son of Edward Harry Matheny, Son of Jocelyn Grey Matheny, son of Daniel B. Matheny, son of Daniel Matheny. I know many of you from reunions in the past.”

Daniel ‘Dan’ John Matheny

Dec. 25, 1946 – March 5, 2023

Daniel “Dan” John Matheny, 76, of Lebanon, passed away March 5, 2023.

He was born Dec. 25, 1946, in Portland, the second son of Donald Edward and Dale Sylvia (Power) Matheny.

He grew up in Halsey and remembers dressing up to go into Lebanon. He was proud of his pioneer heritage and had ancestors who came over in 1843 in one of the first wagon trains to Oregon.

Dan served in the United States Air Force, retiring after serving for over 22 years.

He was a computer operator, recreation specialist (he taught water skiing at Lake LBJ in Texas), flight simulator instructor and missile site manager.

While serving he lived in Texas, Washington, Guam, Idaho, Illinois, South Dakota and Missouri.

After retiring from the Air Force he returned to his beloved Oregon and eventually opened his own hearing aid business.

He then lived in Bend, Burns, Woodburn, Keizer and Lebanon. In 2009 he became the owner of Oregon Hearing Health Service and commuted from Keizer until 2015 when he and his wife bought their dream property outside Lebanon.

He enjoyed church, woodworking, gardening, fishing, reading, playing chess and Words with Friends. He loved his family.

Dan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy of Lebanon; four children David (Halli) Matheny of Leander, Texas, Samuel Matheny of Corvallis, Katrina (Kevin) Shaffer of Williamsburg, Va.; and Andrew (Carrie) Matheny of Gresham; one brother, Ronald (Susan) Matheny of Madras; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-parents; two brothers, Thomas David Matheny (1950-1971), and James Alan Matheny (1946-2004); and one sister who died at birth in 1943, Jeanette Ann Matheny.

The parking lot is where we capture all the good ideas for activities, research, communication, etc. that we don’t want to lose but may not be ready to implement yet.

When you have an idea you would like to see happen, create a title to help identify it. Add a description with as much or as little detail as you like. Send them to newsletter@hmcfamily.org. It will be posted in the website Parking Lot. It will stay there until you decide to implement it.

Family members can express their interest in your idea by emailing newsletter@hmcfamily.org giving the title and indicating if they are:

  • In Support, but not wanting to participate or be kept informed;
  • Interested and want to know more or be kept informed (by email), but not wanting to participate at this time; or,
  • Wanting to participate, including any specifics on what they would like to do.

We will keep you informed of the level of interest and put you in contact with those who are Wanting to Participate.

If you have an idea, but are not able to implement it, post it anyway. Someone else may have the same idea and be happy to do it.
